About Houston Poker — Independent Editorial Directory

Houston Poker is the Houston-specific editorial directory for live card rooms and local poker. We cover every active Houston-area private social card room on the PokerAtlas registry, explain Texas poker law in plain English, and maintain the pillar guides a Houston player actually uses — from “first time at a card room” to “seat fee math” to “which room fits my game.”

What we do

A complete directory of Houston-area card rooms. All 18 rooms with honest editorial — who each room is for, neighborhood context, player pool character — and a single reference link to each room’s PokerAtlas profile for the real-time data (waitlists, hours, tournaments).

Plain-English Texas poker law. Our legal guide covers Texas Penal Code §47, the member-fee / seat-fee model, the 2019 Houston raids, and the March 2026 Lodge Card Club raid — what it actually means for players and operators.

What we don’t do

We don’t run card tables. We don’t take rake. We don’t charge membership. We’re not affiliated with any Houston card room and we don’t accept payment for favorable coverage of any specific room.

We don’t try to replicate PokerAtlas’s live-data layer. They do that well; we’re the narrative layer on top — local context, opinion, and editorial. Their TableCaptain software handles every Houston room’s waitlist and schedule in real time, and we link out to each room’s profile accordingly.

Editorial principles

Honest about what we know and don’t. For rooms with deep verified data (TCH, Champions, 101, Spades, The Hangar), we write with real specificity. For smaller rooms, we write accurate-but-general editorial and defer to PokerAtlas for specs — and we say so.

Evergreen-first. We don’t promise daily or weekly updates. Our content is structured to stay relevant for months without edits. If a room closes, the directory reflects it as soon as PokerAtlas’s registry changes.

Conflict-of-interest transparent. Some outbound links (ClubWPT Gold, Global Poker) are affiliate links and we disclose that on the page where they appear. All room directory links are uncompensated — we list rooms based on the PokerAtlas registry, not on paid placement.

About the editorial team

Editorial principles

• Independence. We are not owned, operated, or sponsored by any Houston card room. Editorial rankings reflect honest judgment, not paid placement. We disclose every affiliate relationship on the page where it appears.
• Sourcing. Real-time data (hours, waitlists, tournament schedules) comes from the operator-maintained PokerAtlas registry. Legal coverage is sourced from the Texas Penal Code, court records, and primary news reporting. We name our sources.
• Evergreen by design. We don’t chase news cycles or republish operator press releases. Pages are written to stay accurate for months without edits, and we update room editorial only when material things change (closures, fee model changes, ownership changes).
• Houston-only scope. We only cover Houston-area rooms. We don’t pretend to be experts on Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, or out-of-state rooms.
• Player-first. Every editorial decision asks: would this help a Houston player make a better decision tonight? If not, we cut it.

How we rank rooms

Editorial rankings are based on first-hand visits, conversations with regulars, and observable factors: dealer quality and table management, cleanliness and safety, fairness of the fee structure relative to game depth, consistency of cash-game and tournament action, and player-pool character. We do not rank rooms based on advertising spend, affiliate payouts, or operator relationships.
